Glover Park: A Growing Recreation Destination in Glen Allen

Already a destination for soccer, football, volleyball, and tournament play, Glover Park is in the middle of a major expansion that will transform this Glen Allen sports complex into a much broader community recreation destination.

Discovering Glover Park

Drive along Greenwood Road in Glen Allen and you'll find one of Henrico County's newer recreation destinations — and one that's still evolving.

Glover Park, located at 11217 Greenwood Road, is currently best known for its synthetic turf athletic fields and sand volleyball courts.

But that's only part of the story.

Henrico County is in the middle of a major expansion that will add trails, a large playground, a dog park, additional multipurpose fields, baseball facilities, outdoor fitness areas, a new entrance from Woodman Road, and other community amenities.

When everything is complete, Glover Park will encompass 209 acres and combine tournament-level sports facilities with recreation opportunities designed for everyday community use.

For residents of northern Glen Allen, it's becoming a park worth watching.

More Than Just Another Sports Complex

Glover Park opened its first phase as a tournament-level sports facility.

Today, the park includes four lighted synthetic turf multipurpose fields capable of supporting sports such as:

  • Soccer

  • Football

  • Lacrosse

  • Other field sports

The facility also includes eight sand volleyball courts, restrooms, and parking.

Those facilities are regularly used by local schools, recreation leagues, practices, games, and tournament events.

When fields aren't reserved, Henrico County also allows the public to use them on a first-come, first-served basis.

But Glover Park was never intended to stop there.

From Greenwood Park to Glover Park

The park was originally known as Greenwood Park during its planning and early development.

That changed in 2018, when Henrico County renamed the facility in honor of longtime Brookland District Supervisor Richard W. Glover.

Glover had served on Henrico's Board of Supervisors for nearly 30 years before his death in 2017.

Youth recreation had been one of his longtime interests, making the developing sports and recreation complex a fitting place to recognize his service to the county.

The first phase represented an approximately $11 million investment and initially developed about 33 acres of the much larger property.

Almost immediately, the facility began hosting regional soccer tournaments and other athletic events.

A Destination for Local Sports

On a typical week, Glover Park may be filled with practices and local games.

On tournament weekends, the atmosphere can be completely different.

Teams, families, coaches, and spectators arrive from throughout the Richmond region and beyond.

The park has been used for tournament competition since its opening, including major regional soccer events.

That's intentional.

Henrico County has increasingly developed athletic facilities that serve two purposes:

  • Providing recreation opportunities for residents

  • Attracting tournaments and sporting events to the county

Glover Park plays an important role in both.

Eight Sand Volleyball Courts

One feature that helps distinguish Glover Park from many other Henrico parks is its collection of eight sand volleyball courts.

The courts were developed through a partnership with the Richmond Volleyball Club.

That adds another recreational option beyond the multipurpose turf fields and gives the complex a somewhat different identity from a traditional soccer or football facility.

It's another example of how Glover Park was designed around organized athletics from the beginning.

Glover Park Is Getting Much Bigger

The most interesting part of Glover Park's story right now may be what's still being built.

Henrico County has expanded the park property to 209 acres, and construction on the next major phase began in 2024.

The approximately $40 million project is designed to turn Glover Park into both a larger tournament destination and a much more complete community park.

For residents who have visited Glover Park in the past and thought, "This is basically just sports fields," that's about to change.

A Large New Playground

One of the major additions will be a large playground.

That's important because the original phase of Glover Park was heavily focused on organized sports.

The expansion broadens the park's purpose.

A family won't necessarily need to have a child playing soccer, football, lacrosse, or volleyball to have a reason to visit.

Henrico County currently expects the new playground to open in fall 2026 as construction progresses.

Glen Allen's Largest Dog Park

Dog owners will also have a new reason to visit.

The expansion includes what Henrico County describes as its largest dog park, covering approximately 1.75 acres.

Plans call for:

  • Natural grass

  • Shade structures

  • Seating areas

It's another significant shift away from Glover Park being exclusively associated with organized athletics.

Once open, the dog park will provide an everyday recreational amenity for nearby residents even when there isn't a game or tournament happening.

Henrico County currently anticipates opening the dog park in fall 2026.

More Than Three Miles of Trails

Perhaps the addition I'm most interested in from a neighborhood-lifestyle perspective is the trail system.

Plans include approximately 3.1 miles of gravel trails traveling through the park's natural areas along the Chickahominy.

That's a very different experience from watching a soccer tournament on synthetic turf.

The trail network will give visitors an opportunity to:

  • Walk

  • Jog

  • Explore the natural areas of the property

  • Exercise away from the athletic fields

  • Spend time outdoors without participating in organized sports

The trails are currently expected to open in fall 2026.

Connecting With the Fall Line Trail

Glover Park's trail plans also connect to a much bigger recreation project.

A shared-use path along Lambert Way is planned to connect Glover Park with the Fall Line Trail north of the park near Woodman Road.

The Fall Line is being developed as a regional trail connecting communities across the Richmond area.

That means Glover Park could eventually function as more than a destination by itself.

It becomes part of a larger trail and transportation network.

For nearby Glen Allen residents, that's a particularly interesting piece of the park's long-term development.

Outdoor Fitness & Cooling Areas

The community-focused expansion also includes amenities designed for people who aren't participating in team sports.

Plans include:

  • Outdoor exercise stations

  • A fitness area

  • Cooling stations

  • Misting poles

  • Shade areas

Those features complement the new trails, playground, and dog park and help create a facility with much broader everyday appeal.

Instead of simply arriving for a scheduled game, residents will have reasons to use the park on their own schedule.

More Fields Are Coming

Organized sports will still remain a major part of Glover Park.

The expansion includes two additional lighted synthetic turf multipurpose fields, increasing the park's capacity for soccer, football, lacrosse, and similar activities.

Those fields are expected to open along with several of the community amenities in fall 2026.

And then comes another major addition.

College-Level Baseball Facilities

Glover Park is also being developed as a significant baseball destination.

Plans include two synthetic turf baseball fields constructed to NCAA regulations.

One of those fields will include:

  • 500 fixed seats

  • Additional terrace seating in the outfield

  • Dugouts

  • Bullpens

  • Scoreboards

  • Sports lighting

Henrico County currently expects the baseball facilities to be ready for the spring 2027 season.

That will add yet another type of sporting event to a park already known for tournament competition.

A New Entrance From Woodman Road

As Glover Park expands, access to the property is expanding with it.

The next phase includes a new park entrance from Woodman Road, along with approximately 1,250 additional parking spaces.

That's a substantial change for a park many Glen Allen residents currently associate primarily with its Greenwood Road entrance.

It also reflects just how much larger and busier the completed park is expected to become.

Sports Tourism in Henrico County

Glover Park is also part of a larger story happening throughout Henrico County.

The county has invested heavily in sports facilities designed to attract regional and national tournaments while also providing facilities for residents.

Those events bring visiting teams and families who stay in local hotels, eat at restaurants, shop, and spend money throughout the area.

Henrico reported in September 2026 that visitor spending in the county surpassed $2 billion in 2025, and county officials specifically identified continued investment in sports facilities — including the baseball complex coming to Glover Park — as part of that tourism strategy.

So when you see construction happening at Glover Park, it's part of something considerably larger than simply adding another playground or athletic field.

Why Glover Park Is Worth Watching

Unlike some of the other places we've explored in this series, Glover Park isn't interesting because of what happened there 100 or 200 years ago.

Its story is happening right now.

This is a park that's still becoming what Henrico County originally envisioned.

Today, you might know it primarily as the place where your child plays soccer or where a weekend tournament is being held.

By the end of 2026 and into 2027, that experience should look very different.

Trails.

A large playground.

A 1.75-acre dog park.

Outdoor fitness areas.

Additional multipurpose fields.

College-level baseball facilities.

A connection toward the Fall Line Trail.

And more than 200 acres of park property.

Glover Park is evolving from a specialized athletic complex into a much broader recreation destination for northern Henrico.

Discover Another Side of Glen Allen

One of the things I like about this series is that every destination tells us something different about Glen Allen.

Meadow Farm tells us about the area's agricultural past.

Walkerton Tavern takes us back to the days of early travel along Mountain Road.

The Virginia Randolph Museum tells an important story about education.

Echo Lake reveals a part of the area's African American recreation history.

And Glover Park shows us something completely different:

where Glen Allen is going next.

As northern Henrico continues to grow, places like Glover Park become increasingly important pieces of the community.

They're where kids practice.

Where families spend weekends.

Where neighbors walk their dogs.

Where people exercise.

Where tournaments bring visitors into the area.

And increasingly, they're part of what defines everyday life in Glen Allen.
